Mr. BAR-B-Q Platinum Prestige 21-Piece Tool Set

Late last week, as a gift, I received the Mr. BAR-B-Q Platinum Prestige 21-Piece Tool Set.

I didn't have a chance to use it right away but when I did I was impressed. It came with a 4-in-1 spatula, fork, basting brush, tongs, knife, 4 skewers, 8 corn holders, grill brush, 1 replacement grill brush head and salt and pepper shakers. It's relatively low priced (it was free to me!!!) and the components included with the kit are all pretty high quality. I really like the fact that everything is in a case....that will come in handy this summer when I'm out camping.

I already have a nice set of BBQ tools I use at home, but this will come in handy there too when I have lots of company and have 2 - 3 grills going at the same time.

Discuss Cooking Forums

I spend quite a bit of time online and am always on the lookout for places to discuss and learn about cooking. A couple weeks ago I came across Discuss Cooking and have been popping in there a couple times a day most of the time. It's a very helpful and friendly community...stop by and say hi if you get a chance.

(it's a pretty large community I write this they are closing in on 100,000 posts!)

The Kitchen or the Yard?

As I was standing outside last night enjoying a somewhat cool night (in comparison to the heat wave that's been in Chicago the last few days) I was thinking how much I was enjoying the moment. Standing outside on my deck grilling some chicken and Italian sausage I realized that I enjoy cooking outside a lot more than I do cooking inside. Maybe it's just being outside in the open, or maybe it's the taste of food off the grill instead of what I can make it in the kitchen...I'm not sure.

What I am sure of though is that when it's possible, outside cooking is the way to go in my book. I may have to move south as there is a very small window here in Chicago when outdoor cooking is really enjoyable. Ever tried to cook outside when it's 40 below and wind is whipping in Chicago?

Cook on!

New Look for A Cooking Site

I changed the Blogger template I was using earlier today. I was having problems with the other template, plus, I just think this one looks better.

While I was messing around with the template I decided to add a directory so that I could easily link back to other cooking related sites that I think are interesting or that this site's visitors will find useful. I'll add a ,lot of sites on my own over time, but feel free to add your own cooking related site if you stumble across this post.

Hottest Hot Sauce in the World

I love hot food - the hotter the better.

I've been pretty lazy today just browsing around the web before dinner. I decided to see if I could find the hottest hot sauce out there. Thanks to good old Google, I found some pretty decent lists of hot sauces.

I'd really like to get my hands on the first one (even though it's not really a sauce) on that list.

"Blair's 16 Million Reserve That's it. The race is over. It's chemically impossible to get any hotter ! Not really a sauce, but worthy of inclusion. What you will find inside the Famous Reserve bottle is amazing, a 1ml pharmaceutical grade vial filled with this Pure Capsaicin Crystal. --No more than 999 Bottles will be offered "

That site also provided a link to Screamin Demon's hot stuff store.

Looks like they have some decent prices. I may place an order and see how it goes.

Cooking Blogs

I was browsing around the web today and came across some good cooking blogs. After reading for a bit I decided to post links so everyone can check them out:

"I just love food. I love reading about food, writing about food, cooking food and.. not surprisingly, eating food. I live in Stockholm, Sweden, with my fiance and our five cats, and I'm 29 years old."

"Arthur Hungry is an online food journal (sometimes called a food blog) started in October 2003. Basically, the point is for me to take pictures of everything I eat, post those pictures online, and talk about the food. "

"I'm a writer, student, activist, book fiend, current events junkie and foodie living on Florida's Gulf Coast. "

More to follow as my browsing continues!

Omaha Steaks

It was a great afternoon to have a little cookout. Today's feature was 4 Omaha Steaks cooked medium well.

Omaha Steaks

I cooked them just a touch too long on one side which lead to a little, let's say, extra flavor. All an all though they turned out great. It's not often I have Omaha brand steaks but everytime I do I remember just how tasty they really are.

Alcohol in Cooking

A friend of mine was trying to convince me that if you cook using alcohol of any kind that it's completely "gone" after you're done cooking. I doubted that and did some research this morning and here's what I found in terms of how much alcohol is left "after cooking"

Here are the facts from the Agricultural Research Service of the USDA (1989):

Alcohol remaining after preparation: 100%
Immediate consumption 70%
Overnight storage 85%
Boiling liquid, remove from heat 75%
Flame baked or simmered: 40%
after 15 min 35%
after 30 min 25%
after 1 hour 20%
after 1.5 hour10%
after 2 hours 5%

Help Feed the Hungry

I can't really even imagine what it's like to not be able to eat food I like, much less to be able to get ANY FOOD AT ALL. While I was browsing around today I came across this site, Help Feed the Hungry.

From their site:

"It is estimated that one billion people in the world suffer from hunger and malnutrition. That's roughly 100 times as many as those who actually die from these causes each year.

About 24,000 people die every day from hunger or hunger-related causes. This is down from 35,000 ten years ago, and 41,000 twenty years ago. Three-fourths of the deaths are children under the age of five. "

If can spare a little please do and help feed people around the world who are not as fortunate.

Burgers and Cold Beer

I have day planned with the grill today. Starting off in afew minutes with a couple of burgers on the grill that I'll wash down with some ice cold Sam Adams. Think I'll wrap some corn on the cob in tin foil with some butter and throw them on the grill to.

Later tonight it's off to another bbq that some friends are having...and of course some more Sam Adams!

I love summer:-)

Deadman Eating Weblog

Very short entry...came across this and thought it worth posting about:

It talks about what people request for their last meal...weird topic for a blog (at least for me) but still pretty interesting.

Grilling Tonight!

If the weather stays nice I'm going to fire up the grill and make some steaks and chicken. There's nothing that beats cooking out on a Saturday night when it's nice outside. Good food and good friends outside on the deck are a perfect recipe for a great Saturday night.
